Frequently Asked Questions From Donors
When I make a gift to the Annual Fund, what is it used for?
By definition, gifts made to the Annual Fund are unrestricted; that means that the funds may be used for any purpose deemed appropriate by the Board of Trustees in consultation with SOWA. Annual Fund gifts are vital as they allow SOWA to place resources where they are most needed, often when those resources are otherwise unavailable.
What is SOWA’s fiscal year?
A fiscal year is a 12-month period used primarily for accounting purposes. SOWA’s fiscal year starts on January 1 and ends on December 31.
What are matching gifts?
Many employers will match donations given by their employees to qualified charitable organizations. To determine if your employer will match your donation to SOWA, you may contact your human resources department. Once you’ve determined that your employer will match your gift, you must complete the matching gift form provided by your employer and send it to SOWA. SOWA will verify your gift, complete the form and return it to your employer. Once we receive the matching gift from your employer, we will acknowledge both you and your employer for the gift.
How do I determine the tax implications of my gift(s)?
SOWA cannot advise you on the tax implications of your gift. We recommend that you speak with your accountant, financial planner, or tax attorney to determine the tax issues related to your gift(s).
How can I be sure that my personal contact information is safe? Will SOWA give my name or address to any outside organization?

Is your online donation form secure?
Our online donation system is secure.
We use two payment processors. When you make a one-time donation, your payment is processed by Stripe. Recurring donations are processed by another third-party called iATS.
Both systems handle communications through the Secure Sockets Layer protocol (SSL). The SSL protocol is the industry standard method for creating an encrypted, secure connection between your computer and a web server.
